I really wish the interviewer was using a better quality of microphone. There was a lot of distortion coming through which made it more difficult to hear. My guess is that it was a $15 uni directional mic whereas for a UA-cam video you need a $60 or preferably a $100 one.

I think this issue of “denial” re hearing aid usage is very complex and misunderstood. Hearing loss is thankfully now considered as a public health problem similar to others, such as chronic diseases that sicken and kill us. However, there is almost no education about HL at the primary prevention (societal/community) level or even provider offices. And the latter are varied, with MDs, hearing aid dealers and now over the counter and online providers providing services, with no overall policy measuring cost and quality outcomes in these sectors. There tends to be a blaming the victim mentality where well intended providers say people don’t get hearing aids or retain them but I think this reflects a lack of effective health education. I am a sociologist w/ a public health background who has lived with hearing loss for 35 years. A consumer focus is integral to public health. But I do not think there are any national surveys asking consumers what they think about these issues. Such research be conducted by a neutral party, not the hearing aid companies. I think such an endeavor would be of great value to both providers and patients.

This isn’t always an issue of hearing loss. If you have ADHD, you may also have auditory processing disorder. If you’re not fully attentive, people’s speech may sound like gibberish or you may say “what?” And then mid-way through repeating themselves, it finally clicks and you finally process what they initially said.

Now try the telephone dial tone test - put the phone to your left ear, and then your right ear. For me, the "pitch" is higher in the left ear and not quite to the same volume as the right ear. Thus, and Hearing test(s) have confirmed this, my right ear is stronger. Both my parents had severe hearing loss, and, I am fortunate that (well, so far) my hearing loss is considered mild / possibly moderate. My hearing used to be great, phenomenal in fact when I was thirty, thirty five ~ but as the years go by, many of us suffer from some level of hearing loss. Music is not the same for me now, although I manage = if it is just a vocalist with modest instrumentation, I get by - but some of these orchestrations that are elaborate, that's another story. A crowded noisy restaurant? Forget it, I really struggle as my ear can no longer disseminate and separate sounds accordingly. I just wear ear plugs and ask my friends to please accept my apologies, that I'm not intending to be rude, I just struggle too much in ultra noisy environments = I just do the best I can. I don't think my loss is strong enough to yet warrant the use of a Hearing aid, but I'm sure that's in my Future somewhere down the road.

I'm sending you this link so you can check the symptoms and see if there are any links to your problem; if there is, see an audiologist, talk about your discovery and start your treatment. I have had Tinnitus since 1997 and some days are much worse than other days, but this past year, oh brother my tinnitus is a terrible annoying Hissing (like bacon frying) sound - it's sooo annoying and distracting - plus, I went to an ENT doctor and they said my hearing loss was considered mild - I have about 96% hearing in my right ear and about 88% in my left ear, with occasional Pitch discrepancy (diplacusis) and sound sensitivity - I have tried hearing supplements, maskers, ear exercises ~ really, to be honest, nothing helps much. If I play a CD with sounds that match my tinnitus, I suppose one could say that helps marginally. I wish I could go see the Doctor interviewed here, I did not find much help really from the ENT doctor I went to although they were all very nice. What hurts me most is that I'm a former nightclub and studio vocalist, and while I don't do that for a living any longer I miss 'hearing' music the way I used to - I can sort of get by but many musical pieces now have a 'distorted edge' to them. I wish there was a miracle cure for Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, hearing loss and other auditory dysfunctions -

It's really confusing. I do hear well. The problem is, sometimes, randomly, I would hear somebody, hear their voices, know they spoke to me, but have no idea of what they just said. It just sound like "uuooooouuuuu" I mean there is no syllabe it's just inintelligible. Or sometimes, I do understand but what I heard has nothing to do with what they actually said. I hear phonetically close enough words, but not what they actually said. Since I'm french it's hard to give an actual exemple, I'm sorry. Oh and I have trouble understanding what people say when there is too much noise and the TV HAS to be above an certain volume, otherwise I have to actively try to understand what they say (when It's too low the TV sound feel exactly like the modified audio the Doctor made in this video) It is tiring. Because of those I had countless arguments with my Mom. Because Mom is convinced that I do hear and I'm just faking. She doesn't get mad for it anymore but back then she would get mad and refuse to repeat what she said and expect me to obey to something I never understood. And when I would try to guess what she said and get it right she would just dismiss me and say "See? You are just playing with me" or something along those lines. And when I am at school and those episode happens, I can work around it IF I see the lips of the person talking. When I can feel like I'm missing out I watch their lips and things make sense. The problem is that it happens randomly, once in the while, with no consistency, but often enough to make me worry a bit. And with the covid it's annoying because everyone wear mask and I can't watch people's lips anymore :-( .

@Uchiha9Unmei HI! I am Brazilian and a student of speech therapy and audiology. Over here we are studying Auditory processing disorder, it seems to me that it is not something as well known and studied as it should be. As I read your story, I associated this disorder somewhat. I'm sending you this link so you can check the symptoms and see if there are any links to your problem; if there is, see an audiologist, talk about your discovery and start your treatment. Everything will be fine! Come back to tell me the result too! A big hug! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auditory_processing_disorder

I was hoping he would explain something like this. I've not heard of Auditory Processing Disorder and have looked it up in Wikipedia. I first decided I might have this condition in my late 20s and as I grow older - I'm currently 80 - I suspect this syndrome might be getting worse. Thank you so much for mentioned it.

@@sogley You're welcome! I became aware of my problem 20 years ago. It hasn't helped me get through to doctors, though. They don't ask what it means. I bring my spouse to all appointments, and that helps. Knowing that I have APD has helped. I no longer *blame myself.*
